Never before have there been so many different and affordable capabilities available for businesses to build and deliver new applications and services for their customers. Never before has the market been as competitive as it is today. And never before has the challenge of IT leadership and IT operations been so critical to business success. In order to fully capitalize on the business opportunities and fend off competitive threats that the current convergence of technical and social trends provide, companies will need to become much better at managing their IT operations and engaging their internal customers. Companies that can manage the multiple technologies that make up today’s increasingly hybrid IT world while keeping the focus on business performance and impact (rather than technology for technology’s sake) will have significant operational and innovative advantages over their competitors.
Today’s IT world is increasingly hybrid. Cloud-based computing has made major inroads on many areas of on-premise computing, opening new opportunities for applications and services that would never have been possible before. But the monolithic “datacenter” of yesteryear, with heavy concentrations of the products of a single vendor in place, has not been completely replaced by the Cloud. Instead it has given way to a hybrid environment that includes physical datacenters and clouds, decades-old legacy systems, licensed and open-source applications and infrastructure components, and cloud-based services from many different vendors.
Further, the convergence of several technical and social trends has created an IT environment that presents tremendous business opportunities for companies that can harness them. As a result, competition and the risk/opportunity for radical disruption is intense.
Tight execution of IT operations that deliver the expected level of customer experience, and close cooperation between IT and line of business decision makers, are critical to companies’ success in today’s highly competitive environment.
With IT taking a prominent role in the success of every business function, the IT organization needs to move from being a necessary supporting function to being a full partner with the business leadership. Doing so requires a program that monitors and manages application service performance, and also that communicates the appropriate performance data to the right IT, line-of-business, and C-Level stakeholders.
