Questions during the Q&A session
In May we hosted two webinars entitled “Live Maps 7.4 Release” in which we discussed a number of new innovative features which we added to our flagship solution Live Maps. We created an integration with ServiceNow, enhanced the visualization of performance information and added more ways to create membership rules.
During both webinars we received a lot of interesting questions which we reproduced in this blog.
Q1: Can the maps be built automatically or are they completely manual?
There are a number of options for automatically creating maps and services. For common Microsoft applications like SharePoint, Exchange, and Active Directory you can take advantage of our “out of the box” services to create complete service definitions with a single click. For custom .NET web applications based on IIS and SQL Server we offer an application discovery module that will find the components and generate a service definition that can then be imported into Live Maps. Finally, we can import and synchronize with distributed applications created by automated tools like BlueStripe.
Q2: What is required from SCOM to build the dashboards? Are there any pre-built dashboards like for Exchange, that I can just go and select my Exchange servers in SCOM and it will build the diagram for me?
Live Maps comes with “out of the box” service definitions for common Microsoft applications including Exchange. Simply choose one of the “out of the box” service definitions and all the relevant maps will be automatically built for you. If you have a suggestion for an “out of the box” service you’d like to see added, please let us know.
Q3: If a dashboard is built manually and if SCOM subsequently discovers new objects will they be part of the dashboard automatically or will we have to manually add them?
The best practice for building maps and services is to use membership rules rather than adding objects individually. If you use membership rules the maps and services that you build will automatically be kept up to date as SCOM discovers new objects.
Q4: Will the new object will be unassigned on Live Maps or visible on the diagram?
The new object will be visible on the diagram under the “Unplaced objects” list. The health state of the new object will contribute to the health state of the diagram and related services.
Q5: Does the ServiceNow integration automatically start with some default screens/dashboards?
The ServiceNow integration synchronizes your business services from SCOM to ServiceNow. At that point you are free to use the tools in ServiceNow to view the business services and their relationships to incidents and change requests. If you have any suggestions for enhancements to the ServiceNow integration we’d love to hear them.
