With the release of Live Maps for Operations Manager 2012 a new integration with System Center 2012 – Service Manager is provided. An overview of this integration is provided in this post with a more detailed explanation on the installation and provided functionality. Currently only a 64-bit (x64) version of the System Center 2012 – Service Manager integration is offered with Live Maps for Operations Manager 2012, which will extend a 64-bit Service Manager 2012 Console installation with the option to open your Live Maps views that do represent a Business Service modeled through Live Maps and show you the Affected Services of a Work Item in Service Manager.
How-To: Live Maps integration with a 32-bit Service Manager 2012 Console
But what if you are using a 32-bit (x86) installation of the Service Manager 2012 Console on your 32-bit client machine?
When you try to install the System Center 2012 – Service Manager integration there, you will be presented with an error dialog like below:
There is not a System Center 2012 – Service Manager integration available for x86 systems in the current release of Live Maps for Operations Manager 2012.
Recently one of our partners ran into this issue while implementing Live Maps and its Service Manager integration at a customer and with some help from our Support team a workaround was found (as per Microsoft MVP Cameron Fuller’s blog article). In order to be able to utilize the System Center 2012 – Service Manager integration as offered with Live Maps for Operations Manager 2012 on a 32-bit (x86) installation, the dll’s used by the 64-bit integration can be added to the 32-bit installation of the Service Manager 2012 Console.
The easiest way to get the dll’s required onto the 32-bit client where the Service Manager 2012 console is installed, is by performing an Administrative Install of the Service Manager 2012 integration package. First, create a temporary destination directory (C:\Temp in this example) and then execute the following from a command prompt window (where ServiceManagerIntegration is a folder on drive D: that contains the Live Maps installation software):
msiexec /a Savision.LiveMaps.ServiceManager2012.Integration.Setup.msi
Following the Windows Installer wizard, specify the previously created temporary destination folder as the “Network Location” and click ‘Next’ twice to start the installation:
From the temporary destination folder, copy the following dll’s to the Service Manager Console installation folder:
The Service Manager Console installation folder is C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012\Service Manager by default:
Once these files are copied an the Service Manager Console is started again, the Live Maps Integration features do function as intended:
In a future Live Maps version a 32-bit version of the integration with System Center 2012 – Service Manager is to be expected. In the meantime, this workaround will provide those using a 32-bit version of the Service Manager 2012 console an intermediate solution by manually applying the 64-bit version of the Live Maps Integration with Service Manager 2012.
